Traveling fee for the 2024 season is $450.00 with a $50 training/tryout fee required prior to tryouts.  Please note if your son(s) is placed on a team the balance due is $400.00 which will be billed in two payments March 1st and April 1st.  Also, If your son(s) are placed on a team and you choose NOT to play after teams are posted the $450 is non-refundable.  The $50 training/tryout fee is not refundable.

At this level, evaluation (tryout) scores are the basis for the team formation for the traveling teams.  The goal of the process is to ensure players are placed at the level where they will have the greatest opportunity to develop their skills.  OAA encourages all 9-15 year old players to attend tryouts.

Again this year our evaluators will be coaches from the Tartan High School Baseball team.  The coaches have years of baseball experience and will provide an unbiased evaluation of the players.

The evaluation will be similar to what a player would experience when attending a baseball clinic.  Their experience has shown that combining the feel of a clinic with the tryout process is less stressful, allowing the player to focus and assisting in reaching an impartial overall understanding of a player's ability.

Players will participate in each of the below stations and will be scored by the Tartan coaching staff at each station

  1. Hitting Stations: Players will hit off of a tee, at a short toss station, and pitching station.
  2. Infield Stations: Players will receive ground balls, field the ball, and throw it back to the first baseman.
  3. Outfield Station: Players will start in various locations, receive fly balls, catch the ball, and throw to a cutoff man.
  4. Arm Strength Station: Players will throw the ball back and forth to another player, gradually increasing the distance.

Evaluators are not solely basing their scores on results; they are also taking into account many other factors such as technique, bat speed, contact point, fielding form, throwing ability, accuracy and strength, footwork, etc.

Evaluators have the option to ask a player to repeat any of the above stations (if needed).

Upon completion of tryouts, the Tartan staff will provide OAA with the overall scores for each player.

TEAM INFORMATION

Teams will be posted on the OAA website.

The results will categorize the players into 3 levels (where needed).   A/AA/AAA Traveling teams (estimated 11/12 players per team).

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING TRYOUTS

Players are asked not to wear anything that has prior teams played on, or their last name on their clothing.

Tennis shoes MUST be worn at tryouts, NO SPIKES!

Players are to bring their glove, helmet, bat, batting gloves, protective cup and water.

Tryout participants will have a tryout number (sticker) attached to their shirt.  It is helpful if the players wear a cotton shirt and avoid wearing "Under Armor" style shirts.

All players are highly encouraged to practice batting, catching and throwing in advance of tryouts.  Players should arrive ready to play - no accommodations will be made for a "rusty" player!

PARENT/PLAYER EXPECTATIONS

Traveling teams are a more intense level of baseball which require a greater degree of commitment.  Teams may participate in practices or games 3-4 days during the week and will play approximately 3-4 weekend tournaments in the months of May, June and July.   Teams qualifying for State Tournaments will continue to play through the first week of August.  Players should be playing for only one organized baseball team during the season.  Players and parents should agree ahead of time to the level of commitment.  Please do not occupy the place of a player who is willing to do so.

OAA will fund 3 tournaments during the season.  Teams that qualify for a state tournament are required to cover tournament entry and gate fee outside the 3 OAA sponsored tournaments.  If the state tournament falls in the 3 tournaments sponsored by OAA, the cost will be covered.

Please try to keep the tryout process in perspective.  Ultimately the goal of a tryout/evaluation process is to place players on teams where they will have the best chance for success and overall skill development.
